1918 (30 February) Letter by Sean MacEntee sent from Gloucester Prison relating to the 1918 General Election
two page manuscript
25 by 20cm., 10 by 8in.

An interesting handwritten and signed letter by Seán MacEntee dated 30 February 1918 and sent to Paddy Gaffney. MacEntee, who served with the GPO Garrison during the 1916 Rebellion, was sentenced to death after the Rising but this was later commuted to life imprisonment. In this letter, he makes a number of references to the censor and his problems with them, the 1918 flu pandemic, inquires about "Cathal B" and also states that "I suppose the general expectation is that we are to be released soon. We think the rumours to that effect ought to be highly discounted. They probably emanate from the "Freeman" or kindred circles with a view to influencing the election against us." MacEntee was elected as an MP for Monaghan South in later that year.
