1918 25C --Double Struck in Collar--AU55 NGC. Errors of
1918<25C>--Double Struck in Collar--AU55 NGC. Errors of any kind are very rare on Standing Liberty quarters. We are not certain exactly why this is, but it certainly is the case. It may as simple an explanation as the limited number of years these coins were struck. While the tag of Double Struck in Collar sounds simple enough, it does not adequately convey what we see on this coin. One would think that the devices would be doubled, but that is not evident on this piece. It appears that there was some sort of collar malfunction. The obverse rim is extraordinarily wide, almost like a broadstrike. The reverse is encircled by a high knife rim. We just are not quite sure what happened here. This is one of those "ask Fred Weinberg" type of questions. The surfaces are lackluster and lightly toned, and there is a shallow scratch on the lower left portion of the obverse.
