1918<1C> MS67 Red PCGS. Looking more like it just popped out of a fresh roll of modern Lincoln cents, this cent strains credibility to be nearly 90 years old. Fresh, orange-red, satiny surfaces complement a total absence of visible marks. Only under a strong loupe does the stray tick or flyspeck appear. Robustly struck on obverse and reverse.
Even the designer's initials are strong on this phenomenal example. The year 1918 is noteworthy to Lincoln fans for another reason besides being the last of World War I coinage. The year marks, for the first time since 1909, the return of tiny V.D.B. initials to the groove under Lincoln's coat, for designer Victor D. Brenner. They had been removed following the furor over his placing the initials on the 1909 and 1909-S cents reverse, even though there were longstanding precedents for such a move. A major opportunity to acquire this rarity, which is among the finest known. In an old-style PCGS green-label holder. Population: 8 in 67, 1 finer (11/05).
From The Joshua and Ally Walsh Collection of United States Cents.
