Fantastic example of a World War I - 1917 expended artillery shell casing turned into a beautiful Trench Art Commemorative Vase. Embossed oak leaf & acorns motif, commemorating the battle where this shell was recovered, "Argonne" & the date "1918". The bottom of the shell stamped with mfg date of August 1917. ** Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials that were available to them. ** The Meuse–Argonne offensive was a major part of the final Allied offensive of World War I that stretched along the entire Western Front. It was fought from September 26, 1918, until the Armistice of November 11, 1918, a total of 47 days.
