Quarter Dollars 1917-s Type 1. NGC graded Mint State 65. <b>Golden brown peripheral toning on both sides, silvery frost from the center to the rims, a first-class Gem! United States silver coins struck in 1916 and early 1917 exhibit a textured luster, almost velvety, that is unlike anything before or since. The velvety smoothness is most apparent on sharp Mint State specimens of the new designs: Mercury Dimes, say, or this Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter, as well as the early Walking Liberty Half Dollars. The closest one can come in comparison is on the very rare Satin Finish Proofs also struck in the teens. The present Standing Liberty Type 1 Quarter shows this textured luster to its fullest (and, we might add, quite alluring) effect.
