1917-S 50C Obverse MS65 PCGS. The difficulty that collectors will experience in locating a 1917-S Ob
1917-S 50C Obverse MS65 PCGS. The difficulty that collectors will experience in locating a 1917-S Obverse Half increases dramatically when one crosses above the VF grade level. In Mint State, this issue is the second rarest in the Walking Liberty series after the 1919-S. Although this low mintage (952,000 pieces) Half Dollar was once considered to be a strike rarity, Bruce Fox (The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, 1993) seems to suggest that the term "condition rarity" would be a more appropriate adjective for the '17-S Obverse. The present Gem displays otherwise sharp striking detail that wanes ever so slightly over a few of the highpoints in and around the centers. Golden-gray patina envelops both sides, over which sprays of tan-russet and cobalt-blue colors have gathered on the obverse and around the reverse periphery. The luster is full, and the surfaces are one or two tiny bagmarks away from an even higher grade. A find for the advanced Walking Liberty Half Dollar date collector, and a coin that should see considerable bidder competition.
