1917-S<10C> MS67 Full Bands PCGS. Type of 1917. David W. Lange's The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes explains how Adolph W. Weinman's progressive, forward-looking "Mercury" dime design, complementing the many other beautiful contemporaneous coin redesigns, in 1917 was lowered in relief to meet the exigencies of high-speed coinage, thus depriving collectors and art enthusiasts of much of the design's boldness and vigor. Besides the design changes, the 1917-S shows two styles of mintmark, with the Type of 1917 featuring a small but more open mintmark. This coin is difficult to find only in Gem grades or higher. The present example, of course, is an unsurpassed Superb Gem coin, highly brilliant on both sides but with a slight transparent wash of lilac on the reverse. Robustly struck, with slight weakness on the lower diagonal fasces band, as often seen, and virtually mark-free. Population: 10 in 67, 0 finer (11/05).
From The Larry Shapiro #1 All-Time Finest Mercury Dimes Full Bands Basic PCGS Registry Set.
