1917 G$1 McKinley MS67 NGC. The McKinley dollars of 1916 and 1917 were, in the words of Q. David Bowers (1991), "ostensibly issued for an altruistic purpose." Still, while the record shows poor design and marketing of the pieces, one detects none of the malice that tinged certain later commemorative issues, and the aforementioned "altruistic purpose," the construction of a birthplace memorial for the assassinated Ohioan, was fulfilled. The building, now part of a complex that includes a library, stands at 40 North Main Street in the town of Niles.
Hints of frost visit the swirling luster of this well struck and slightly satiny representative. The surfaces, peach-gold with a hint of straw, are exquisitely preserved. Even under magnification, the fields border on unimprovable. A truly top-notch survivor, with no numerically finer pieces graded by either NGC or PCGS (10/07).
From The Fleur Wales-Baillie Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
