1917 First National Bank of Colorado Springs voucher with Joseph Burns signature
This is a 1916 Joseph Burns signed First National Bank of Colorado Springs voucher for the Theater Magazine. Burns was a glade trotting miner. He made a fortune mining gold in Peru only to lose it all in Cuba. He won $20,000 on the New Orleans lottery, but lost it in the cotton brokerage business. He arrived in Colorado Springs in 1887 and worked as a carpenter. But the mining bug would just not go away and on January 22, 1892 he (and partner) made a claim in the Cripple Creek area and named it the Portland after his home town. Burns became a past owner and manager of the very rich Portland Mine. Burns was known as a miner's manager as he would spend large sums of money to bring the bodies of dead miners out of the mine and give the miner's families money to help them out. Burns died within the year of this signed voucher. Historical documentation included.
