1917-D 5C MS66 PCGS. Scarce in VF and better grades. Mint State coins are not only rare, but the ones that do exist are oftentimes hampered by weak strikes. Much of this lack of detail is not from lack of striking pressure, but instead from die erosion. At first glance this piece appears to be a sharply struck coin from non-eroded dies. However, the reverse rim from 12 to 4 o'clock shows extensive rim crumbling. Fully struck on the obverse, the reverse is just a bit shy of a full strike. The softly frosted mint luster is overlaid by light rose and lilac toning on each side. A superlative coin in all respects. Population: 14 in 66, 0 finer (12/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
