1917-D 5C MS66 PCGS. This sale has featured several important Buffalo nickels so far, and this attractive example is yet another top-drawer representative of Fraser's iconic series. Perhaps the most striking feature of the coin offered here is its appearance, which does not suggest a 1917-D in some ways. Considering this issue's typical design definition, the devices display unusually strong detail. Granted, the bison's shoulder is a trifle weak, but the Indian's braid has features that are considerably sharper than the norm. The shimmering silver-gray surfaces have glints of white, mint-green, and sky-blue. While a lone mark above the ribbon precludes a higher grade, this remains a wonderful piece, deservedly tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
