1917-D 5C MS66 PCGS. Although NGC and PCGS report
1917-D<5C> MS66 PCGS. Although NGC and PCGS report 12 other 1917-D Buffalo Nickels at the MS66 grade level (3/05), we doubt whether there is a more desirable representative of this strike and condition rarity extant. Die erosion is the most prevalent impediment to a sharp strike on examples of this D-mint issue. This coin is nearly free of that feature, both sides exhibiting a smooth, satiny sheen that allows full appreciation of the boldly, if not sharply defined devices. There is, however, a worthwhile pedigree marker: one can see a small, well concealed horizontal contact mark about halfway down the Indian's longest feather. The surfaces are beautifully toned; the obverse presenting concentric shades of rose, ice-blue, antique-gold, and magenta toward the border. The reverse exhibits similar colors, but these arranged in a variegated fashion.
While the original mintage of 9.9 million pieces is certainly not the lowest in the series, the 1917-D Nickel is an elusive coin in circulated as well as Mint State grades. Clearly this is a bidding opportunity that is probably not to be repeated anytime in the near future. Population: 12 in 66, 0 finer (3/05).
