1917-D 50C Reverse MS66 PCGS.
1917-D 50C Reverse MS66 PCGS.<p>Ex: Cassano. Early in 1917, the United States Mint moved the mintmark on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from the obverse below the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse near the rim at about 8 o'clock. Although more 1917-D Reverse Mintmark Half Dollars were produced than their similarly dated Obverse Mintmark counterparts, the former delivery is by far the more difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades. In fact, Bruce Fox (The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, 1993) asserts that the '17-D Reverse is more challenging to locate as a fully struck Gem than either the 1919-S or the 1921-D. This Condition Census Gem is uncommonly well produced for the issue with bold, if not sharp definition in all areas. Both sides are frosty in finish with dominant champagne-apricot iridescence and a few isolated swirls of ice-blue color over the lower obverse. Virtually abrasion-free with a streak of tan color on the reverse. We last offered an MS66 PCGS representative of this important second-year issue as lot 6884 in our January 2000 FUN Signature Sale. That coin realized $25,300. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (3/02).From the Ally Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
