1917-D 50C Reverse MS65 NGC. On February 14, 1917, a policy change by the Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken moved the mintmark from its conspicuous obverse prominence to a more obscure reverse location, where it remained, for Denver and San Francisco issues, until 1947, the final year for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The '17-D Reverse is a curious issue. Even though the mintage was higher for this issue than the Obverse Mintmark issue, it is actually more difficult to locate in Uncirculated grades. Obviously, fewer Reverse Mintmark examples were preserved at the time of issue, most likely because of the novelty of the Obverse Mintmark coins. This is a splendid, fully struck example. The surfaces are smooth and a frosted sheen covers each side. Richly toned with medium density gray-golden patina over both obverse and reverse. Population: 18 in 65, 4 finer (7/02).From the Hans Poetsch Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
