1917 1C Doubled Die MS66 Red PCGS. FS-0
1917<1C> Doubled Die MS66 Red PCGS. FS-013. Breen-2081. Andrew Frandsen is noted by Breen as the discoverer of the 1917 Doubled Die Obverse, sixty years after its production. Die doubling is strong on the 9 and 7 in the date, and GOD WE TRUST has an equally impressive clockwise spread. Described in Cherrypickers' as "certainly one of the top five Lincoln cent varieties. Extremely rare in mint state." Years of searching have yielded few results, and this remains one of the most sought-after Lincoln cent varieties for specialists to obtain. The importance of the variety has further increased in recent years, with the advent of variety Registry Sets. PCGS has certified only 13 pieces as Red in all Mint State grades, and it is possible that this figure includes resubmissions. Without doubt, there are far more Lincoln cent specialists who seek to include high grade examples of this Guide Book variety within their holdings. This lustrous orange-red Premium Gem has a penetrating strike, since there is no indication of softness on the O in ONE or the AM in AMERICA. Carbon is unimportant, and marks are virtually absent. An inconspicuous planchet flaw on Lincoln's shoulder will identify the present piece in any future auction appearances. Population: 4 in 66 Red, 2 finer (1/06).
