1917<1C> Doubled Die MS62 Brown PCGS. FS-013. Under a loupe, obverse doubling is evident on the letters in WE TRUST, and on the digits 7 and 9 in the date. A widely publicized mint error, the 1917 Doubled Die is listed on page 114 of the 2006 Guide Book, page 229 of Breen's Encyclopedia, and page 95 of Fivaz and Stanton's Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties (Fourth Ed., Vol. I. Although obviously popular today, this error went unnoticed until 1977, by which time most examples had acquired heavy wear from circulation.
This Mint State specimen certainly ranks high among the known examples of this scarce variety. The surfaces are predominantly chocolate-brown in color with a few accents of red-orange and blue-green patina. Both sides are free of sizeable abrasions, but a few wispy blemishes are evident using magnification. Nevertheless, this important example is worthy of a carefully considered bid.
