1916 Walking Liberty Half PCGS MS66 [L#2216
A satiny gem of the finest order. A high degree of bright cartwheel luster spins broadly beneath rich gold and antique silver accents. Nicely struck without the usual weak areas at the hand, leg, and head. Mintage: 608,000.

The first design of the ever-popular Walking Liberty Half Dollar (1916) has small, rather spiky stars on the flag with only a faint line separating the star field from the field of stripes. The red stripes are not clearly set off from the white ones by any sort of border line. The ground line from the date to the sun is softly defined and rounded at the top while the base of ray 8 from the sun is much too close to the base of ray 7. Many of these features were modified in later years, but the 1916 has remained true to the artist’s wishes. The design is by Adolph A. Weinman, who is also responsible for creating the Mercury dime.
