1916-S<5C> MS66 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint produced a substantial number of coins in 1916, with nearly 12 million nickels struck through the year. Despite this impressively high mintage, few survivors were save by collectors at the time as there were few collectors on the West Coast. The small distribution of Panama-Pacific commemorative gold coins in the previous year provides an indication of California numismatic activities in the early 20th century.
This Premium Gem is one of the finest examples of this issue that we have enjoyed cataloging. We have only handled one of the four finer grade examples since 1993. Both sides have frosty nickel-gray surfaces with intense luster. The surfaces have tiny freckles of color, but these are only visible with a magnifier. Hints of lovely golden toning are visible near the border on each side. The design elements on each side are not fully struck, but they are clearly finer than usually encountered. This is a remarkable Gem that will please most any collector or connoisseur. Population: 24 in 66, 4 finer (7/06).
