1916-S $5 MS65 NGC
1916-S $5 MS65 NGC. In the mid-1910s, demand for American gold coinage subsided as the United States edged ever closer to full involvement in the ongoing Great War. Most such pieces were used in the international markets, and the battles in Europe stalled most such commerce. In 1916, San Francisco struck 240,000 half eagles, the only mint to coin the half eagle denomination that year, and no facility would strike more until the final issue of 1929.
Neither the rarest nor the most common of issues, the 1916-S is nonetheless highly elusive in MS65. This Gem offers interesting, swirling luster, and the wheat-gold surfaces display little of the granularity often evident on other examples. The strike is sharp, characteristic for the issue, with only one area of slight weakness at the mintmark. A lovely piece that is sure to attract the attention of date set collectors. Census: 7 in 65, 2 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
