1916-S $5 MS63 NGC. The 1916-S (240,000 pieces struck)
1916-S<$5> MS63 NGC. The 1916-S (240,000 pieces struck) is surprisingly scarcer than the 1908-S (82,000 pieces produced) despite the wide disparity in mintage figures. It would appear that by 1916 the novelty of the incuse design had worn off and few examples were preserved for today's specialists. This piece displays a rich, frosty texture and pleasing luster quality. The color is predominantly copper-gold in shade, but whispers of orange iridescence are evident at certain angles. A few abrasions on the obverse and reverse seem to limit the grade, but the bidding opportunity that this coin represents should not be taken lightly. Census: 59 in 63, 55 finer (6/06).
