1916-S $10 MS67 PCGS.<p>We have not handled a finer 1916-S Indian Eagle in recent memory, and we doubt whether more than one or two coins can rival the awesome eye appeal of this thickly frosted Superb Gem. The color alone is worthy of special attention, being orange-gold in shade with a deeply set and unquestionably original sheen. Many examples of this issue are poorly impressed over the first two digits in the date, but this coin does not display that feature. Actually, none of the devices exhibit bothersome striking incompleteness, and the surfaces are remarkably pristine for a survivor of this date. A lone, vertical abrasion in the left obverse field before the eagle's head is useful as a pedigree marker. PCGS has seen just two coins in MS67, with none finer, and NGC has yet to certify a single example above the MS65 grade level (9/01). As an issue, the 1916-S is the most common Indian Eagle from the San Francisco Mint. Two small hoards of '16-S Eagles surfaced in the mid to late-1970s. Most of the 100-125 coins contained in these hoards, however, grade no finer than MS63 due to insufficient luster, and this issue remains a significant condition rarity in the finer Mint State grades. From the Bill Dailey Collection.
