<B>1916-S $10 MS66 PCGS.</B></I> It is interesting that both the ten and twenty dollar issues of the 1916-S were hoarded and those hoard coins are responsible for the majority of high grade examples known today. Of course, the difference between the two hoards is that some of the tens were discovered in Beverly Hills, while a bag of the twenties turned up in El Salvador. Most of the hoard coins of the tens display muted luster for some reason, which is one reason we believe this piece is not a hoard piece. The luster is radiant with dramatic rose and lilac iridescence on each side. Another reason it does not appear to be a hoard piece is the exceptionally high grade, which in large part is derived from the lack of abrasions on each side. The strike is typical for the issue with some softness apparent on the fore part of the eagle's wing and also on the right (facing) claw. All S-mint ten dollar Indians are rare in the highest grade and the 1916-S is no exception, which is supported by the population data. An MS66 example was last offered in the Heritage sale of the Phillip Morse collection in November 2005 where it realized $48,875.
