1916 Liberty Standing 25c PCGS MS65 FH
A definite highlight of this sale, this problem-free Gem is one of the most significant Quarters of the design that we have offered in quite some time. The eye appeal is out of this world, with dominant natural patination that yields to the underlying silvery iridescence. Frosty textured luster swirls around both sides, the underlying sheen barely touched by the passage of nearly 90 years since this coin was made. The strike is bold in most areas, which is why the grading service described Liberty's head as full; it also has a decent shield with complete if somewhat faint shield rivets. The latter features are not all that uncommon for the 1916 issue, and a lack of outwardly distracting abrasions confirms the validity of the MS-65 grade. A coin for the advanced collector who demands rock-solid quality and eye appeal for his/her Standing Liberty Quarter set.

The standing Liberty quarter was "intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection," Mint Director von Engelken said at the time the coins first appeared early in 1917. "In the new design Liberty is shown a full-length figure, front view, with head turned toward the left, stepping forward to the gateway of the country …The left arm of the figure of Liberty is upraised, bearing the shield in the attitude of protection, from which the covering is being drawn. The right hand bears the olive branch of peace. " (#5705)
