1916-D 50C MS67 NGC. While we have handled a numb
1916-D<50C> MS67 NGC. While we have handled a number of MS66 examples, this is only the second time that we have offered a Superb MS67 example of this issue for sale at auction. Indeed, this is a rare date in such high quality. This is a stunning Superb Gem with fully brilliant silver surfaces. Both sides are bright white without evidence of toning. The lustrous surfaces have a textured appearance, with almost matte-like qualities, as often seen on these early Walkers. In The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, author Bruce Fox noted: "It is believed that the Denver Mint established a policy to preserve die life by setting the dies a little further apart than normal. This caused a wide variance in striking characteristics. This issue exhibits slight flatness on the eagle's breast." The present piece obviously ignored the Denver Mint policy of weak strikes, for it is as sharp as any we have seen. Population: 7 in 67, 0 finer (6/05).
From The Robert Moreno Collection.
