1916-D 10C MS67 Full Bands PCGS. This cataloger, as well as many others in today's rare coin auction industry, has spilled a great deal of ink about the 1916-D Mercury Dime. The attention that survivors of this first-year issue often receive in the finest catalogs is perhaps the best indication of its popularity with numismatists. Indeed, there can be no doubt that the '16-D is the most widely pursued date in the entire Mercury Dime series of 1916-1945. We have little difficulty auctioning genuine examples even in the lowest circulated grades, and we frequently offer Choice and Gem quality survivors in our Signature Sales. Believe it or not, coins in the latter grades, as well as at all levels of Mint State preservation, are more likely to display Full Bands definition than to exhibit bothersome incompleteness of strike in that area. The '16-D is among the more carefully produced issues in this series. The problem, however, is that there are simply not enough high grade examples extant to meet the unflagging demand of advanced collectors who specialize in Dimes of this type. This is true even though a decent number of coins were saved as the first D-mint coins of this design. Nonetheless, a collector with enough patience and sufficiently deep pockets will usually be able to acquire a near-Gem or Gem without too much waiting. A Superb Gem, however, is another matter entirely. Over the past ten years, we have handled only one other 1916-D Mercury Dime that graded MS67 Full Bands at PCGS. That coin, which was part of the William Dominick Collection, realized $128,800 as lot 6208 in our April 2001 Central States Signature Sale. Definitely the equal of that coin in terms of both surface preservation and eye appeal, this pretty example is fully brought up in all areas with rich, swirling, frosty mint luster. Blushes of orange-tan iridescence adorn the otherwise lilac tinged surfaces, and there is not a single bothersome abrasion. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only eight '16-D Dimes at this level of preservation, and there are none certified finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
