1916-D 10C MS65 NGC. The 264,000 pieces that comprised the entire mintage of 1916-D dimes were struck in one month, November. The story of that truncated mintage, often-told but worth repeating, places every Mint Superintendent at a meeting in Washington, D.C., where the Denver chief was instructed to halt production of most denominations and concentrate on the Barber quarter, unexpectedly in demand. The result was an instantly recognized rarity, popular to this day.
The Gem offered here exhibits stellar visual appeal. The strike is solid overall, and only a tiny section at the center of the fasces keeps the piece from Full Bands status. The surfaces are slightly satiny, as is the case with a majority of Mint State examples, and display vivid patina that ranges from subtle silver-blue over the devices and parts of the fields to strawberry, gold, and blue-green color elsewhere. An incredible example of this key issue and the finest non-Full Bands piece ever offered by Heritage. Census: 1 in 65 S, 2 finer (5/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
