1916-D<10C> MS64 Full Bands NGC. Sharply struck and fully lustrous. Almost fully brilliant, with a faint blush of pale gold at the obverse rim. Virtually all design features are defined to full advantage including the cap, feathers, and almost all of Liberty's hair tresses. On the reverse, the fasces, olive branch, and inscriptions are boldly and deeply rendered. A mere 264,000 Mercury dimes were coined at the Denver Mint in 1916, and although the 1916-D is not rare in an absolute sense, it is certain very scarce by 20th-century standards; indeed, no other date and mintmark combination in the Mercury dime series has a mintage smaller than 1,000,000 pieces. Since most collectors didn't bother with mintmarks in early part of the 20th century, comparatively few were set aside at the time of issue, and today the supply of Uncirculated pieces is not capable of accommodating collector demand. The great majority of numismatists have to be satisfied with an example in the Good to XF grade range.
