1916-D 10C MS63 Full Bands PCGS. The 1916-D dime has been a collector favorite since the mid-1930s. As related in David Lange's second edition of A Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes, "This early awareness of its rarity resulted largely from the introduction of inexpensive coin boards in 1934." Lange has also published a book on these coin boards and their effect on the hobby.
In spite of its popularity, relatively few high grade 1916-D dimes were set aside. Probably 500 or so pieces are extant today in all grades of Uncirculated, but the vast majority of those are heavily weighted at the lower end of the Mint State scale. This piece is brilliant overall. The obverse shows numerous small abrasions that keep the coin from an even higher grade, but most are not visible without magnification.

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
