1916-D<10C> MS63 Full Bands NGC. For more than half a century, the 1916-D has been regarded as the key issue in the Mercury dime series. Only 264,000 pieces were struck before Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken halted production on November 24, to refocus the Mint's efforts toward the manufacture of quarters. The surfaces on this piece are very clean and perhaps suggestive of an even higher grade. The strike is complete, and the central reverse bands display sharp definition from end to end. The dies were rotated clockwise by approximately twenty degrees. The luster is bright and satiny, displaying a slightly granular texture that is characteristic of many coins struck during the teens. Essentially brilliant, there are faint amounts of peach patina on each side. A lustrous, pleasing example of this always popular key date.
