1916 5C PR67 PCGS. Anticipating reduced sales that year, the Philadelphia Mint produced only 600 specimen strikings of the 1916 Buffalo Nickel. Even that limited total proved to be overoptimistic. When the federal government took the decision to cease proof coin sales at the end of the year, many of the 1916 examples (as well as some of those dated 1915) were most likely melted as unsold. The rarest of the proof Buffalo Nickel deliveries produced prior to 1936, the present survivor is untoned save for the lightest blushes of golden patina through the centers. Every feature is fully brought up, and the surfaces, which are satiny in finish, are expectantly pristine for the PR67 designation. Population: 24 in 67, only five are certified finer at this grading service (10/02).From the BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
