1916 5C PR64 NGC. This issue's limited original mintage of 600 pieces is almost certainly explained by the Mint's failure to achieve widespread approval for the specimen striking Buffalo Nickel. After having produced the type in proof format since 1913, the federal government had little to show for its efforts in the area of collector support. Once again, 1916 certainly witnessed the year-end destruction of countless unsold examples. Among the more carefully preserved of the elusive 1916-dated survivors is this originally toned near-Gem. Both sides display orange-tan peripheral color around centers that are either champagne tinged or blue-gray in appearance. Were it not for a relatively well concealed reverse spot on the bison's horn, this smooth, satiny example would probably warrant consideration at the PR65 level.From an East Coast cabinet.
