1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU55 NGC. FS-016. This variety is an extremely important issue in the Buffalo nickel series, and is accorded the special honor of its own listing in the Guide Book where it has been listed since the late 1970s. While many varieties have been added to the listings of this annual reference in recent years, the '16 doubled die nickel, the '55 doubled die cent, and a few others have been included for many years.
This is a pleasing example with sharp doubling on the obverse. Both sides retain nearly full mint luster beneath dark gray-gold toning with hints of iridescence. Although a few faint surface marks are evident, neither side has any noticeable distractions to be concerned about.
While doubled die varieties exist in nearly every series of copper, nickel, silver, and gold coinage, few are as dramatic as this example. Some of the more visible doubled dies, such as the 1873 Indian cent, the 1955, 1969-S, 1972, 1983, and 1984 Lincoln cents, and this 1916 nickel, are listed in the Guide Book. There are many other doubled die varieties that are less obvious, and these are listed in important references such as Breen's Complete Encyclopedia, and the Cherrypickers' Guide by Fivaz and Stanton.
In The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, David Lange notes that this important variety has been known since its first publication in the July 1962 issue of The Numismatic Scrapbook magazine. The discovery was announced by Herbert Perlin of Pomona, California, and yet the variety was not familiar with most collectors until the 1970s when it was described in the September 1976 issue of The Coin Dealer Newsletter. It is fascinating to ponder why a variety of this magnitude, struck in Philadelphia, was discovered on the other side of the country.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
