1916 50C MS68 NGC. The 1916 half dollar, with its 608,000-piece mintage, was saved in relatively large numbers, as is typical for most first-year-of-issue coins. NGC/PCGS census/population figures reflect this, showing nearly 2,000 Mint State pieces certified by the two services. The date is readily available through near-Gem, and even Gem and Premium Gem specimens are obtainable with patience and searching. MS67 pieces are rare, and a mere solitary coin (the example in this lot) has been certified in the lofty grade of MS68.
Gorgeous satiny surfaces display potent luster and are nearly untoned, save for barely discernible wisps of light tan and ice-blue. A powerful strike emboldens the design features, including virtually full definition in Liberty's left hand and the adjacent branches. As is typical with all issues through 1921, Liberty's gown lines are weak. Bruce Fox (1993) attributes this to the "... lack of engraving details on the working dies and/or weaker than needed striking force on the presses dialed in to preserve the dies." Both sides are impeccably preserved. The Walking Liberty half aficionado will not want to miss out on this unbelievable coin!

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
