1916<25C> MS66 Full Head NGC. Over the years we have seen many 1916 Quarters, including several Mint State examples (big auctions tend to draw out rarities). But we have rarely handled a 1916 with the luster and toning seen on this piece. The thick mint frost sparkles over each side and gives "life" to the rich toning: smoky golden-russet over the reverse, the obverse is similar, but somewhat lighter with rose-gold tinges. After closely examining the coin with a loupe, a couple of small abrasions are seen on Liberty's thigh and knee, these being the only of note. Sharply struck throughout with complete definition on Liberty's head, as noted above. One of the finest 1916 Quarters in existence.
The coinage of the 1916 quarters was rushed through. One can imagine the Philadelphia Mint in 1916, a major World War was unfolding across the Atlantic, the economy here at home was gearing up for what looked to become a drawn out conflict. The new designs for the Walking Liberty half dollar and new Mercury dime had just been adapted and all the changes necessary to accomplish those two denominations were completed. On top of this, the new Standing Liberty quarter came along and new master hubs and dies were engraved. This issue was rushed through in late 1916, with just a comparative handful being struck, 52,000 pieces in all. Curiously, despite the rush, these 1916 quarters were not released until the first large batch of 1917 quarters were released, and they were scattered to the economic winds. Few were saved as the first of their kind, and most circulated for many years before being recognized as the low mintage rarity that they are today. Somehow this one came down to us in magnificent condition, with radiant mint bloom and a blush of light toning. A work of American numismatic art that would make a splendid addition to any advanced collection. Population: 15 in 66, 3 finer (8/05).
