1916<25C> MS65 Full Head PCGS. The small mintage of 52,000 1916 Standing Liberty quarters was produced in December of that year. While MacNeil's design was radically different from the previous one by Charles Barber, a sizeable number of the 52,000 pieces struck was dropped into circulation and stayed there. It appears that most of the nation was not aware of the new design for the quarter until the massively produced 1917 entered the channels of commerce. Then people began to notice the novelty of the new design and pieces were set aside. However, mintage figures in 1916-1917 were not as readily accessible as they are today. Thus, the relative rarity of the 1916 was slowly recognized by the general public (and numismatists as well). By the time its special status was widely recognized, most examples had been in circulation for years and high grade examples were difficult to locate.
This is an especially attractive, high grade example. The surfaces are notable for the granular texture that is common to all examples of the 1916. On this piece, it seems even more pronounced and is overlaid by bright, satiny mint luster. Fully struck, there are no obvious marks on either side, and the coin displays just the slightest hint of color.
