1916 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. The key-date 1916 Standing Liberty quarter tends to be a softly struck issue. Full Head coins are uncommon, as less than 3 percent are thought to possess this attribute. In his Fourth Edition of Standing Liberty Quarters, J.H. Cline writes: "The dies were completed in July 1916 and lay idle until December 16 before any striking took place. Striking dies are made of high speed steel, which is difficult to rustproof. As a result, accumulated rust combined with subsequent polishing to remove the rust eroded and diminished most high points on the dies."
The near-Gem Full Head coin in the current lot is thus expected to attract considerable attention from Standing Liberty enthusiasts. The impressive strike transcends Liberty's head to include strong definition in the horizontal shield lines, clarity in all of the rivets (though they are not bold, as virtually none are on this issue), and sharpness on the eagle's torso. Pleasing luster emanates from surfaces visited by russet and golden-orange on the obverse and bluish-gray and olive-green on the reverse. A few minute obverse marks preclude full Gem classification, but a marvelous specimen nevertheless.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
