1916<25C> MS64 Full Head PCGS. A particularly lustrous and attractive example of this coveted issue, which is seldom found so well preserved. On the lower obverse rim there are flecks of iridescent toning, with peripheral gold elsewhere on the obverse. The reverse is brighter and shows less colorful toning and displays an aura of light gold to gray over luster. The strike is better than usually encountered, enough so to earn the Full Head designation from PCGS, with most of the finer definition present on Liberty's head and her shield. As always, the obverse stars are whimsically defined on the left and appear almost as an afterthought to the design.
The Standing Liberty Quarter series is one of the more popular collections formed by numismatists as the coins are generally available in high grade and affordable, all except for two issues. The first year of issue is the 1916, which was struck to the tune of 52,000 pieces, a pathetic number for any Twentieth Century United States coin. The other rarity in this series is the 1918/7-S, which is found infrequently and roughly on par in terms of availability with the 1916 issue. Collectors must choose wisely when purchasing these key dates, as many are offered but few offer the desirable characteristics seen here. An exciting coin for the specialist, and always in strong demand. Population: 103 in 64, 77 finer (11/05).
