1916<25C> MS63 Full Head NGC. This coin is generally white in color and lustrous, with pleasing silvery hints on the obverse and reverse. Fairly sharp for this first year of issue, with better than average details on Liberty's head. For some reason, the Philadelphia Mint decided to start coinage of these in late December, 1916, producing a total of 52,000 pieces. These were released with the first run of 1917 quarters produced and entered general circulation without fanfare. As soon as collectors realized that 1916 Standing Liberty quarters were available, a great many were set aside. Nevertheless, collector demand has always been strong for this date, and obtaining this key coin is one of the highlights of any Standing Liberty quarter collection. The identifying markers for this coin are a tiny tick on the leading edge of the left wing of the eagle straight below the UN of UNUM and a tiny horizontal nick on Liberty's left leg a bit below her knee. This particular coin should suit most collectors who are assembling a mint state collection of these popular and beautiful coins.
