1916 25C MS62 NGC. Ice-blue and russet tints intermitt
1916<25C> MS62 NGC. Ice-blue and russet tints intermittently endow the borders, while the fields and devices are dappled gold and cream-gray. This interesting example displays satin luster, and close evaluation beneath a strong glass reveals a granular texture, as made. The strike is also uncommonly sharp on Liberty's head, although the older generation NGC holder does not designate a Full Head attribute. Sharply struck heads on a 1916 are rare. Breen (1988) wrote, "nearly all have flat heads; I have seen no true full-head coin over 30 years." Cline (1997) concurs, "The 1916 is always softly struck in the head and shield." While the details on the head and shield are low relief, they are brought up on the present coin, with no indication of flatness or planchet marks in these areas. The specialist is encouraged to personally inspect this piece in order to fully appreciate its quality for both the issue and the MS62 grade. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is important for its low mintage of 52,000 pieces and its status as a single-year design subtype.
