1916<25C> MS61 ANACS. A lustrous coin that has pleasing light gold toning with splashes of yellow and gray on Liberty. The strike is generally sharp for the issue, but minor weakness is found on Liberty's head and the shield, the areas which are frequently a bit soft for this first year of issue. Examination will note a minor reeding mark on Liberty's chest, and this will serve to identify this coin in the future. Always in strong demand as the mintage of 52,000 pieces created the key date to the series right off the bat. These were released in 1917 along with the 1917 quarters, and many escaped into circulation before being set aside for date collectors. Curiously, this beautiful design was attacked by a small but vocal contingent of the public, and the designs were changed to cover over Liberty's exposed breast in late 1917. For the date collector, obtaining an example of the 1916 is a major challenge, but these can generally be found for a price.
