1916<25C> AU58 PCGS. Just 52,000 pieces of the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter were minted, a number that seems absurdly small when compared to the number of Barber quarters minted that year, over 8.3 million between the Philadelphia and Denver mints. The tiny mintage was largely due to a late start; even on Oct. 22, 1916, the director of the Mint and the superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint were still finalizing the details of the design (from correspondence published in J.H. Cline's Standing Liberty Quarters, third edition.
This near-Mint State example has just a trace of friction on the shield and thigh on the obverse, as well as the wing and breast on the reverse. Lustrous with the soft strike commonly associated with this issue, most notably on the stars. The area around Liberty's lower gown and the date has russet toning, while the rest of the piece has light olive-tan patina.
From The Catfish Creek Collection, Part Two.
