1916 25C AU53 NGC. After President Teddy Roosevel
1916<25C> AU53 NGC. After President Teddy Roosevelt began his campaign for new coinage designs several years earlier, the silver denominations finally had their day. New gold designs were created in 1907 and 1908 with the Lincoln cent making its debut in 1909 and the Buffalo nickel in 1913. New designs for the Mercury dime, the Standing Liberty quarter, and the Walking Liberty half dollar finally appeared in 1916, bringing the Barber design to a close. All of these designs were well-received by the public. The 1916 quarter presented here is the key to the Standing Liberty series. This lightly circulated piece has silvery-gray surfaces with touches of golden-brown toning at the peripheries, which on the reverse begins to gravitate to the center. The designs are slightly soft on the inner and outer shields, and a small mark on Liberty's chest is not bothersome.
From The Stig Ericsson Collection.
