1916 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Despite a mintage that is more than double, the 1916 (1,050 pieces produced) is equally as rare as the first-year 1909 VDB (420 pieces produced). What's more, the 1916 is the most difficult matte proof Lincoln Cent to locate in high grades. Lange (1996) suggests that many examples of this delivery may have been melted as unsold. A fortunate Gem quality survivor, this NGC-certified specimen should be of obvious importance to the numerous collectors who specialize in this 20th century Cent series. Well blended crimson-red and medium brown colors overlay both sides and lighten to streaks of tan patina in the upper left obverse field and on the reverse at the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The fine grain, matte texture surfaces are undisturbed by grade-limiting blemishes, and the devices exhibit razor sharp striking definition throughout. Population: 6 in 66 Red and Brown, there is only one finer with this color designation (11/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
