1915-S 50C Panama-Pacific MS68 PCGS. The Panama-Pa
1915-S 50C Panama-Pacific MS68 PCGS. The Panama-Pacific Exposition was held in San Francisco in 1915 to help celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. Part of the festivities included striking single commemorative coins as well as sets (Half Dollar, One Dollar Gold, Quarter Eagle, and two $50 slugs, one round and the other octagonal). This was accomplished after a 14 ton coining press was disassembled, then moved from Philadelphia, presumably by ship, to the fairgrounds in San Francisco. After striking 60,000 Half Dollars, all in June, 1915, they were offered for a small premium, $1.00 each. Unfortunately, only 27,134 pieces were sold, the remainder was returned to the mint for melting.
This is only the second example to receive this grade from PCGS (1/05). None have achieved this level at NGC. Rainbow colored crescents adorn the peripheries of this otherwise champagne-gray representative. The strike is extraordinarily sharp, and the luster is full with a warmly frosted sheen. A trio of tiny abrasions on the obverse before Columbia's mouth are mentioned solely for pedigree purposes.
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4173
