1915-S 50C Panama-Pacific MS66 NGC. The silvery surfac
1915-S<50C> Panama-Pacific MS66 NGC. The silvery surfaces are brilliant, with tinges of magenta and amber patina around the obverse rim. There are virtually no distractions worth mentioning on either side. A study of this ambitious--if somewhat overarching and crowded--design, along with the various new regular-issue coinage designs launched in 1916, cannot help but make one long for more-artistic designs on current coinage. In 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt used the term "atrocious hideousness" to refer to circulating coinage. Nearly a century later--despite the Mint's less-than-successful Artistic Infusion Program--many would argue that we have come full circle. This lovely commemorative half inspires a breath of fresh air, with a reminder of the artistic freedoms of an earlier generation of U.S. numismatics.
