1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS64 PCGS.
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS64 PCGS.<p>The Mint Act of January 16, 1915 authorized a Fifty Dollar gold piece to commemorate the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Proceeds from sales of these impressive coins would help fund the San Francisco-based Exposition that celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. The work of Robert Aitken, 1,500 Octagonal and 1,500 Round examples were produced by the San Francisco Mint. Many of these coins were melted as unsold, however, and the net mintage for the Octagonal is 645 pieces and for the Round 483 coins. As one can see by these net mintage figures, the Round is the rarer of the two Pan-Pac Slugs, and high grade examples are always in demand among specialists. This coin is a lovely near-Gem whose surfaces are free of all but a few wispy obverse abrasions. The matte-like features exhibit warm, even, honey-gold color that accents the crisply impressed features. A faint, broken planchet streak (as struck) over the upper reverse is noted solely for accuracy. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
