1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PC
1915-S<$50> Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS. A perfect match to the Octagonal $50 in this sale with the same grade. The luster is well preserved in the fields and this coin retains the desired mint imparted glow. Excellent fields and surfaces for the issue, and this coin is quite appealing. Identifiable by a tiny tick on the edge above the I of UNITED and a nick on the upper portion of the F in OF. The round $50 had a net mintage of 483 pieces from the original 1,500 which were struck. When these were sold to the public, they carried a rather steep premium of $100 per coin, hardly within the means of most Americans at the time. Most of these were mishandled over the years as this type of large gold coin often seems to attract edge bumps. Of those that survived, a significant number were cleaned and some were even carried as pocket pieces by attendees to this famous and popular Exposition. Coins which were not sold by early 1916 were melted, as required, making this issue a rarity by almost any standards. An impressive example for the numismatist, and one of the most popular issues in the commemorative series.
