1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS.
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS. One of the rarest and most impressive of all United States coins, the round Pan-Pac Fifty Dollar represents the ultimate in commemorative coinage. Although 1,500 of these were minted originally for sale at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, the selling price of the coins ($100 each) was so high, that less than a third were sold. The unsold balance were returned to the mint for melting, resulting in a net mintage of only 483 rounds. This large, heavy coin (2-1/2 times the weight of a double eagle) features the head of Athena on the obverse and her owl trademark on the reverse, both rife with symbolic meaning. The design is the work of Robert Aitken, whose initials RA are evident on the reverse below the pine branch upon which the owl is perched. This radiant, well preserved example has a few obligatory slidemarks on Athena's portrait, but has escaped any appreciable abrasions. The coin's color and overall eye appeal would be difficult to improve upon regardless of grade. Lot:8654
