1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS. O
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS. One of the most sought-after 20th century issues and a highlight of any auction of United States coins, the round Pan-Pac fifty dollar represents the ultimate in commemorative coinage. Although 1,500 of these were minted originally for sale at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, the selling price of the coins ($100 each) was so high, that fewer than a third were sold. The unsold balance was returned to the mint for melting, resulting in a net mintage of only 483 rounds. This impressively large, heavy coin (2 1/2 times the weight of a double eagle) features the head of Athena on the obverse and her owl trademark on the reverse.
The example offered here is choice and quite pleasing to the eye, being tinted a uniform lemon-gold. A few slide marks on the cheek of Athena (the most susceptible area of the coin), along with a couple of vertical scratches across her helmet are all that separate this piece from a Choice rating. We recommend a close look and a strong bid.
