1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 NGC. One of the rarest and most visually impressive of all United States coins, the round Pan-Pac Fifty Dollar represents the ultimate in commemorative coinage. Although 1,500 pieces were originally produced for sale at the Panama-Pacific Exposition and through the Mint's normal numismatic channels, the selling price (double face or $100 each) was so high, that fewer than a third were sold. The unsold balance was returned to the Mint for melting, resulting in a net mintage of only 483 rounds. This massive issue, which is 2 1/2 times the weight of a double eagle, was struck on the eve of America's involvement in the First World War. At the center of the obverse, the Greek helmet is pushed on Minerva's head in a ready but not fully combative posture. The owl on the reverse signifies wisdom and watchfulness. The example offered here is quite lustrous with appealing color and a particularly Choice reverse. Only the nearly obligatory, wispy lines on the obverse limit its Mint State classification. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
